Refreshing; Taking a Design Break
We all get stuck in a rut, and start over-designing, over-thinking and running in place. The creative process is something that has to be cared for, and not squished by stress. Those stresses can be everything from a tough client, to a sterile work environment or simply lack of perspective. I have worked in-house at two very different places where the creative process was treated very differently. I found the best thing was to take myself out of the project all together.
One of the best things you can learn to do as a designer is to stop designing.
During a nine to five job it can be difficult to figure out HOW to do that. That's where sometimes working freelance, or having other duties outside of one project helps.
Working freelance I get up and do something physical, a walk, or cleaning get your body moving. Think of it like a vacation for your mind. Go for a walk on the beach, breathe in the fresh air and come back refreshed.
If you don't have the ability to change projects, or work on something else for a bit my advice is to possibly change locations. Sometimes taking your lunch break away from your desk, using a free conference room or even moving to a different location within your home office can do the trick. Change it up/ refresh your mind. Remove yourself from the desktop or desk location and sit in a comfy chair and do some creative brainstorming.
